UAAC’s tax clinic has been operating for the past 20 years and was founded by the University of Alberta’s Accounting Club in conjunction with the Canada Revenue Agency. On average, we complete 2500 tax returns per year for low-income individuals. In addition, we have an average of 200 student volunteers, all of whom go through a mandatory training session. These volunteers are mostly Accounting students at the University of Alberta and support the operation of our program.
The tax clinic is a free service that allows low-income individuals to file their annual tax returns. This year the clinic will operate as an appointment-based event where clients come join our virtual Tax Clinic to have their tax return processed. In addition to completing their tax returns, our volunteers also walk the clients through the tax software and often explain the different steps involved in completing their personal tax return. As a result, we help both our student volunteers and clients gain a basic understanding of personal tax returns.
